Shaping the future of 5G

5G as a new communication standard

The new 5G communication standard supports extremely reliable, secure, and fast data transmission with short response times, making manufacturing processes more efficient and productive. The introduction of 5G networks means huge progress, both from a technological and user point of view.

It is expected that by 2025 more than 60billion devices will be connected worldwide - most of them in industrial applications. One of key benefits for the industry is related to real-time critical communications over 5G networks.

5G connectivity is also a key element of industry 4.0 in shaping the future of smart factories. As manufacturing processes in the industry are being reliant on effective use of automatic robots and fast-data machine applications, 5G comes in to improve the data latency resulting in improved quality and efficiency.

5G at Iskra

As an IoT company, Iskra has started the 5G research activities few years ago and currently is involved in a large number of national and international initiatives and committees.

 

Iskra is already offering components and solutions for 5G including smart energy meters, power quality monitoring devices as well as smart traffic solutions. Smart energy meters are already being used to achieve smart functionality in residential and industry buildings as well as utility applications. With 5G, our smart energy meters will become much more widespread, meaning more utility customers can take advantage of detailed analysis of each energy-consuming device within the home/industry environment. As such are also our advanced power quality analyzers – a perfect solution for permanent power quality monitoring. Its advanced operation is useful for network specialists to help finding problems in a network, forecasts potential problems and for future network planning. 

iPot project

Last year Iskra launched the development project "iPot" for the 5G network in Maribor, Slovenia, which is expected to be completed in 2023.

The project has the following objectives: 

  • Establishment of a traffic control center to monitor and perform predictive traffic analysis using IoT
  • Implementation of dynamic traffic regimes on a smart traffic light network 
  • Smart parking for identification of users of parking places via geo-fences
  • Integrated payment for mobility services in the city.
